This is an experiment (okay, it is not really an experiment, but rather a survey of sorts) in collective dreaming. Carl Jung suggested that all of humanity shares a collective unconsciousness. In simple terms this means that we all share common psychological features that guide us through our dreams, drives, and intuition. I am interested in learning about the details of people’s dreams. While I am interested in dream interpretation as an instrument for helping individuals gain insight into their own psyche, I am not concerned with interpretation here. Rather, those of you who many be familiar with Zen koans may understand my interest in the story (i.e., the dream) for the story’s sake alone. A brief definition of a koan is a story that has no particular lesson or moral, but rather is a tool for meditation.

Your Task: Describe one dream in as much detail as possible by posting it to this page. (If you have more than one dream you would like to share, please include only one per day. This will help keep my tracking and comparison manageable.) Please do not make up details or intentionally embellish your reports. Please include your age, gender, nationality, and ethnicity (White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Other, or self-described ethnicity), and religion. While you obviously do not have to include all of this information, the more that you provide, the more comparisons I can make.

Many people have difficulty remembering their dreams. One tip for addressing this is to keep a notebook by your bed and immediately write down everything you can remember about your dreams as soon as you wake up. Over time this will train your brain to better remember your dreams after you wake.

Methodology: It is my intention to analyze (not interpret) these dreams to determine common features, taking into consideration various demographics. By posting your dreams and demographics, you are giving me permission to use the information and my resulting analysis as I see fit. This may include including your contributions, my analysis, and my conclusions in potential publications, on this website, etc. By registering with this site and contributing to this study, you will receive updates on the study’s progress. The study will continue until such time as it seems adequate reports have been obtained to insure a large sample population.
